Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Tchaikovsky is a Russian composer best known for his ballet, Swan Lake. He was born in 1840 and died in 1893 at the age of 53. Music came naturally for Tchaikovsky seeing as both his parents were trained in music. Tchaikovsky started playing piano at the age of 5, and enjoyed his mother's playing and singing. He was a very sensitive and emotional child, so when his mother passed away, he was deeply traumatized.
He graduated from the St. Petersburg School of Law in 1859, then worked at the Justice Department of Russian Empire for three years. In 1862 he studied music, being taught by Anton Rubinstein at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. In 1866 he became a professor of theory and harmony at the Moscow Conservatory. At that time he met Franz Liszt and Hector Berlioz, who were visiting Russia on concert tours. During that time, Tchaikovsky wrote his first and now most famous ballet 'The Swan Lake', an opera titled 'Eugene Onegin', four Symphonies, and the brilliant Piano Concerto Number 1.
